I just spent a wonderfully inspiring Shavuos at Pearlstone Center. As the Baal Koreh I received some feedback that some people were dreading the reading of Akdamus. It is long and not really understandable, was the complaint. Inspired by Ari Lesser, who was a participant in the program, who has developed an accurately translated rap version of most of Tehillim, I decided to compose an Akdamus Rap. Lacking Ari's genius and sufficient time I chose to compose an abridged version focusing on the main themes of Akdamus. While it can still use some tweaking (twenty minutes doesn't get you much) it was very well received by the Pearlstone Mechitza Minyan crowd and I want to share it here:
(to the tune of Akdamus)
Over six days Hashem made Creation,
In order to benefit His beloved nation.
Without any effort and without any toil,
He created a world for us not to soil.
He created Malachim, Ofanim and Serafim
That every day לעומתם משבחים ואומרים.
קדוש קדוש קדוש they recite daily thrice,
For to be in His presence that is the price.
But it was Kalal Yisroel who he truly desired,
Who say Shema daily, even when tired.
Written in his Shel Rosh and in his Shel Yad,
Is מי כעמך ישראל גוי אחד.
We were sent into exile because of our sins,
And live every day, on needles and pins.
The nations try to tempt us with assimilation,
And invite us to join their congregation.
But we turn our eyes to the One above,
Because even when we're lost, we know His love.
We know what awaits us after one-hundred-and-twenty,
When He will shower us with His bounty and plenty.
The Levyasan awaits preserved in salt,
And it will be brought out of Hashem's vault.
We will point and say זה אלי as we dance the Hora,
Because Hashem loves us, He gave us the Torah.
