Amalek (עמלק) punishes the Jewish Nation when they refrain from Torah study despite the fact that they have the peace of mind to study properly. Amalek arrives on the scene and now forces them to study Torah in desolation and confusion. As the Talmud teaches us "One who neglects to study Torah when he is wealthy will end up neglecting it in poverty."
The mind now can only perceive with great toil (עמל) and difficulty.
