Some Good Reading for the Three Weeks

On my most recent trip to Israel, I noticed that there is a wealth of Seforim written and published in Israel, that are unavailable in the United States. To a large extent this is true of those Seforim written by Roshei Yeshiva of the Dati Leumi movement. As the Seforim buying crowd in the US is more of the Chardei sort, these Seforim don't seem to be making it here.

I picked up a few Seforim while in Israel from a variety of authors so that I could get introduced to their teachings and see if any of them were up my alley. One sefer was על מה אבדה הארץ by Rav Benny Kalminzohn. While I have only read the first third of the Sefer, I would already highly recommend it.

If you are familiar with Modern עברית (in contrast with the language used in most Seforim), and want to see a Sefer that gives you an approach as to how to properly analyze Agadta, this is the Sefer for you. As he goes through the Agados of the Churban he tries to find common themes that tie together the stories in Perek HaNizakin in order to offer a comprehensive understanding of what truly were the causes of the Churban.

He is not afraid to make statements which others might find controversial. He speaks in his introduction of the need to understand the roots of the Churban. He explains that as much as he believes that Medinat Yisroel is ראשית צמיחת גאולתינו, anyone who thinks that there is no possibility of another Churban is fooling themselves.

In another piece, explaining the destruction of Tur Malka, he discusses the fact that many people don't understand the difference between a Minhag and Halacha and put too much emphasis on minhagim which can end up creating disastrous results.

All in all, well written and very enjoyable and informative.

Here is another review in עברית.
