The Symbol of Shevat

According to the Zohar a bucket (דלי) is the symbol for the month of שבט (Shevat). During the depths of the winter when it is difficult to be involved in agricultural pursuits it is the time for parents and teachers to pour out their Torah knowledge to others, as if drawing from a well and pouring out for others to drink. (Kabbalistically, receiving is always for the purpose of giving on to someone else).
It is for this reason that Moshe began Sefer Devarim (Deuteronomy) on Rosh Chodesh Shevat as this was his opportunity to clearly teach the Torah to the Jewish people. The Pasuk says he began באר, which literally means to explain, but can also be meant to refer to a well - the well from which he drew Torah with his bucket and poured it out to his beloved students.
