Mining

Precious stones and minerals are usually found only after digging through much worthless dirt. Frequently one must chisel away at what is extraneous to get to what he wants, and sometimes he must put the raw material through the crucible in order to extract something of value.
The same is true when it comes to understanding precious and valuable messages which exist in the Torah. They are not always apparent at first sight. It is only after toil to get to the core of the issues, that one can properly find and appreciate the real message.
